Not by Choice

Tradition continues, a reasonable number of students still opt for their courses of studies while seeking admission to several undergraduate colleges, which are not by choice but by compulsion. A detailed survey and analysis dig out the driving forces.

1) Economy and Finance plays a major role, when the course fees of subjects like Microbiology, BBA are comparatively higher

2) Locational factors play an important role mainly for urban students and girls, where they still prefer to take admission to a college in their vicinity.

3) Some illusive notion, like Science is very tough or Commerce is only for the people with a business mind set.

4) Heredity also influences the choice of avenues opted for by the entrants though to a much lesser extent.

5) Prestigious colleges attract students, even when they fail to qualify for their most preferred subjects, they become ready to compromise thereby opting for any subject, which ensures at least a seat for the candidate at its hallowed precincts.

6) NAAC Accredition hardly strikes a chord because of lack of awareness among the student community and their guardians.

Certain reasons sound really ridiculous if we look at the global perspective, but still the tradition continues.

Time Log - Key to Time Management

Time Log - the step towards effective Time Management

Holistically maintenance of a Time Log not only helps a person for effort analysis, but also forms the basis of Research and Analysis to plan better for a more efficient and effective utilization of time. This happens very oftenly with the IT professionals when the Project Management comes into play.

Activity Log and Deviation

If anybody studies any Activity Log that has maintained ethically, he can analyze that there is a great deviation from Objectives scheduled for Tomorrow.

The Basic reasons may be various. We can just estimate a few but it will much more appropriate, if you draw a graph on your own, as you must believe that no two persons’ problems can hardly be identical.

Some generic reasons for a delivery team are the interim calls for meeting and marketing which causes a major deviation. If one is the technical expert or a team leader then the situation becomes worse. It is highly pertinent to keep adequate provision for Problem Solving session as the juniors will surely seek your help when they are in trouble and who knows that how much time do you really need to solve it!

As flower blossoms, the fragnance is never left behind, a technical expert, in general, is even called accross the department for problem solving.

Refine To Do List

Perhaps the prevailing practice of mentioning only the head-points in the To Do lists are not adequate, where exigencies and deviations are routine affairs in any organisation.

Rather a further break-ups with an estimate of time duration may be more fruitful in future planning, failing which a continued backlog will be created and some important but NOT Urgent type of work can never be accomplished.

This may please be noted that any job, which does not have an urgency always is set backward, at least partially, because of the pressure of Urgent Jobs and at times even due to the procastination tendency, which is an obvious human nature.

A salient example may be like research on new technologies or competitive analysis. Remember, postponemen of such jobs may bring about a business disaster for your organization.

Control your distraction and remain focussed!

Banking Service in India

Public sector banks in India have been observing the ever greatest threats from the foreign and private banks, which have been able to enter into the market much later.

The threat is not only to retain the customers, but today the bigget challenge has been in finding and retaining the efficient people in the banks.

Banking Services Recruitment Board (BSRB), had been the prime authority for recruitement of employess in the bank for long. Now the banks have got the freedom of rcruiting people on their own by publishing advertisements in the newspapers. The examination standard remains same, which is more popularly known as Probationary Officer recruitement standards. The entry level qualification mostly remains graduation with the age limit of 21 and 28 as lower and higher respectively.

There are instances, where the bank is recruiting the right person and after a couple of years, the person is opting out for private and foreign banks, who at times show interest in recruiting experienced people, and obviously experience in another bank adds sustainable value in their credential, when the apply for a change. Some people may want to join private banks and foreign banks for better salaries and perks, some even hop for better challenging enviroenment.

When Information becomes Knowledge

People often confuses between information and knowledge. We must say in the beginning itself that information is not knowledge, rather Information, the processed data is the primary resources, upon which the building knowledge has to be raised. If we look at the complete life cycle, then the path should be like

Data -> Information -> knowledge -> understanding and application -> wisdom.

Information is available and the challenge is to find the place for the right information. Once one collects information, then he needs to apply his intuition to transform the information to knowledge.

Information is liberating, if our minds are programmed properly. Some people are called more intelligent and efficient as the efficient minds will find out the right source for right kind of information faster than the ordinary people.

Strategy needs to be formulated for collecting information or to decide the kind of information is required to fulfill our goal. Once the effective information is fetched, they need to be organized in a systematic manner, followed by the right kind of processing to yield the right conclusion. These steps are mandatory, to transform the information to knowledge.

The secret of success lies in evaluating the right source as information only can lead one to the right knowledge base. Now once the knowledge is traced, it needs to be tested in several new conditions like software products, only then the utility of knowledge is confirmed, which in other word is called experience.

Pretension of knowledge is a serious concern as the normal psychology of people always suffer from insecurity complex, they feel that even if they fail to guide in any issue on the earth, then the artificially built in impression goes down. They literally menace the truth and success of the others.

How knowledge can be enhanced? It is the willingness and curiosity you have within and then the hard work of applying it in real life situations. We will conclude with the quotes of Denis Diderot, “There are three principal means of acquiring knowledge. . . observation of nature, reflection, and experimentation. Observation collects facts; reflection combines them; experimentation verifies the result of that combination.” We will infer that if information is called the seed of success then proper watering is a must to result good fruits, which is knowledge.

Alas! Knowledge is also perishable. What is knowledge today, it can be just a notion tomorrow.

Netaji Mahavidyalaya Arambagh, A seat of learning

Arambagh is a subdivision in the Hooghly district of West Bengal, India. The place is famous for producing multifaceted personalities and blessed with

hallowed memories of Raja Rammohan Roy, Ramkrishna Paramhansa Dev, Ma Sarada Devi and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar.

The glorious heritage of this subdivision has also entrusted its inheritors the responsibility to produce even better qualitative young star for the country.

Netaj Mahavidyalaya Arambagh, was established in 1948 with a commitment of youthful vitality, chivalry and generosity. Even the emblem reveals its golden motto of education, ‘Education is that which liberates us’.

Netaji Mahavidyalaya Arambagh

The college as usual started in a small scale and slowly has grown up to its current stage with a huge asset base. The college wants to promote education to all segments of people.

The principal says, ‘Since majority of the students of the college hail from poor and lower-middle class families and are of average merit, its main challenge is to enable them to get through university examinations as a pre-requisite for going in for higher education and for appearing at different public examinations in future so as to get job’.

And while taking the challenge, the college has to retain the long-term goals keeping in mind the global prospective. Most importantly the college always has focused on the socio-cultural ethical and aesthetic development of students so as to make them ideal citizens of the nation as well as of the world.

The college has building has grown up drastically in the recent years to present the right ambiance to the students to achieve their objectives. The college has facilitated sky-watching center, the right gymnasium apparatus and even post office, press and own photocopy centers to the students and to the people of the locality as a goal of all round educational and cultural environment. The 10.10 acres campus has got an excellent auditorium for organizing seminars and various presentations. A huge playground is available to the students for building up a fine physique, which has resulted some positional achievements in prestigious tournaments.

The college frequently organizes Awareness of Tuberculosis, Blood Donation Camp, AIDS Awareness Program, Yoga Practice to build up harmony between the people and the students of the college

The college Building

Most of the Honours courses are taught in the college with a very intensive focus on environmental education. The college is likely to open up some of the Postgraduate courses in the recent future. The laboratories of the college is highly equipped with the state of the art apparatus and the faculty members use modern teaching aids like slide projector and large projectors to improvise the teaching learning method. The Internet connection is open to all even in such a district area. The college owns more than 30 computers to bring the modern philosophy of teaching as well as to automate the internal system for a more effective management and prompt responses.

But how the college runs so smooth with so many multifarious activities?

“Proper Organization and Management is the engineering force behind the smooth running of the college on all fronts. The college administration is fully democratic and decentralized, participatory management and synergy being the watchword of it”, says the principal, Dr. Asim Kr. De.

The NAAC Steering Committee Co-coordinator Dr. Paramartha Ghosh affirms the concept of decentralization and active participation of all staff members and students and establishes synchronization in achieving a commandable B++ grade in NAAC evaluation, which has taken the college to the front row at one shot.

The GB President

We know everybody talks of democracy and every administrator look for a decentralized system in any ideal environment, but it’s easier said than done. It’s very difficult to percolate the idea in the lower rung of the ladder and that Himalayan task has been successfully accomplished by the governing body, which is presided by Mr. Binay Dutta, who is also a member of legislative assembly. Even an outsider can feel the essence once he walks into the campus.

The College authority is equally concerned about the socio economic effects of education and the growing frustration among the young generation for unemployment.

The College also has started computer education, job oriented courses and also plans to launch many more such courses in the future. He also adds that they have started placement activities and signed up MOU with a few companies. The faculty members take regular participation in various programmes, seminars and encouraged to increase their academics. Some faculty members even take participation in syllabus development and various research activities jointly with some agencies or colleges/ universities.

Dr. Dey’s eyes twinkles while reinforcing, we want to take Netaji Mahavidyalaya Aramabagh to that level, when it will become as an ideal seat of learning and culture in the state as well as in the country in future.

The Principal, Dr. Asim Kr. Dey

Building a campus like Darbhanga Bhaban or buying modern teaching aids or developing a small botanical garden may sound a bit strange to the common people like us and that too when we think in terms of district college, but this is perhaps the first milestone for a visionary, who visualizes his college as the best in the subdivision, so that no aspirant needs to go out of the subdivision for his academics.

We must wish all the best for the fulfillment of dreams of the principal of Netaji Mahavidyalay, to develop it as a center of excellence!

Editor’s Comments

Our passion for education has prompted us to visit colleges and other educational institutes at frequent intervals. We have witnessed the quantum of growth shown by the college in all dimensions. In one word we can describe it as phenomenal. The college has really been able to cultivate efficiency in all it’s activities and if this continues, Netaji Mahavidyalaya has got the potential to elevate its status leaving in its aftermath a blazing trail for others to follow.
